Inside Track: Introducing Fractions

Teaching Video:

Fractions are equal-sized parts of a whole object, shape or number. We introduce fractions starting with one half, helping children to understand what a half is, and what it is not.

Fractions are a very common idea, but not necessarily a simple one. Teachers of young children (and their parents) should start with halves, and help the children develop an accurate idea of what a half is.

I recommend that you include examples which are divided into halves, as well as those that are not.

Like the skills of reading and writing, we want children to be both consumers and producers of mathematical ideas. In the area of fractions, have them identify, cut and glue or color in fractions; then on the other hand, have them draw and write about fractions for an audience.
