The two best strategies for dividing by 4 are:
- halve the number, then halve it again (eg, 16 ÷ 4 : half of 16 is 8, half of 8 = 4, so 16 ÷ 4 = 4)
- think of the related multiplication fact (eg, 36 ÷ 4 : think “4 times what equals 36″ 4 x ___ = 36 : 4 x 9 = 36, so 36 ÷ 4 = 9)
